Background : In Korea, tsutsugamushi disease is one of common diseases which is 30% amon acute febrile diseases occurring in Autumn and has been reported with increasing frequencies through the nation since 1986. It has not been regulated by law and vaccination is not available, so it seems to be increased by frequency. Primary physician's concern is required about it.
Methods : We have conducted a survey on 14 clinically and serologically confirmed cases of tsutsu-gamushi disease admitted to Taejeon Sung Shim Hospital in and Taejeon during the period form October to November in 1994.
Results : Of 14 cases, 9 were males and 5 were females and age distribution was from 22 to 74, 12 cases(86%) ha chances of exposure to fields or mountains. The main symptoms and signs were fever and chill (100%), headache(100%), myalgia(93%), skin rash(86%), eschar(79%), sore throat(71%), conjunctival injection(71%) etc. Al the patient mild clinical coures that the mean duration of improvement of symptoms was 4.5 days with doxycycline oral therapy.
Conclusion : Primary care physicain in the community should alway have concern with the Tsutsu-gamushi disease when he encounters the patients of acute febrile disease in Autumn and select the therapeuti drug prudently. He should also give health education on it for the inhabitants.
