Abstract
With an increase of the need for primary physician who has a main role in the Health Care Delivery System, it is necessary to understand the medical students' attitudes towards Family medicine. So we surveyed the senior students' specialty choice, the reasons why choose that specialty and why not choose family Medicine as a career.
The results are as follows ;
1. The study population were 142 senior students of an university located at Seoul. Among them 127 cases(102 males and 25 females) could be analyzed.
2. Internal Medicine was the most favorable specialty (48.8%) among the students followed by Psychiatry(26.0%) and Family Medicine(25.6%).
3. There were 32 students who consider Family Medicine as a career. To coincide with his philosophical background was the most inportant reason for choice(1.97), followed by the country requir more Family Physician than other specialists(1.72) and to achieve a wide spectrum of knowledge(1.06).
4. There were 95 students who chose other specialties than Family Medicine. The important reasons why they chose that specialty were to achieve intellectually satisfaction(1.43), attractive during medical school lecture or clinical rotation (1.07), and to coincide with his philosophical background(0.76).
5. The important reasons of 91 students who did not cchoose Family Medicine were Family Medicine lacks specialty in academic discipline(1.40), lack of information on Family Medicine(0.95), and not satisfied with training program(0.78).
