In 2024, the Korean Journal of Family Medicine (KJFM) successfully maintained its publication rate by releasing 54 articles, including six editorials, matching the output from 2023. Although there was a slight reduction in the number of original research articles and case reports, the volume of reader letters increased. With several papers currently in preprint and awaiting formal publication, we are committed to increasing the number of original research articles published in 2025.
Our focus continued to be on the pivotal lifestyle factors affecting health, namely, smoking, physical activity, and nutrition. These areas remain crucial for family medicine scholars and primary care providers. In 2024, we turned our attention to under-researched fields, such as adolescent and women’s health, recognizing the need for such studies [1-7]. The potential for future pandemics calls for ongoing vigilance concerning their impact on public health and disease, an area that we have continued to address [8-11].
Since its inception in 1980, KJFM has achieved considerable growth, marking a significant milestone in 2024, as the number of submitted manuscripts jumped to 360, the highest ever, with 301 international submissions from 36 countries. Global participation underscores the journal’s increasing reach and influence. We are immensely grateful to the numerous researchers who have contributed significant findings to our journal.
2024 Journal metrics
After achieving an initial Journal Impact Factor of 2.3 in 2023, it was disappointing to see a decrease to 1.4 in 2024. However, our Citescore by Elsevier stood at 4.0 in 2024, placing us 11th among 56 journals in the family practice category, an encouraging rank that highlights the quality and impact of our publications. The most cited paper from the 2024 publications demonstrated that a higher number of primary care physicians in South Korea is associated with lower mortality rates, a timely study amid heightened interest in the healthcare system due to conflicts between healthcare providers and the government [12,13]. This underlines the importance of soliciting high-impact research articles as they are crucial to the journal’s citation metrics and scientific influence. To further enhance the KJFM’s stature, we are upgrading our website with a new design and features, including graphical abstracts in manuscripts, and are actively pursuing Medline indexing by updating our submission guidelines and journal formats.
Gratitude to our 2024 reviewers
The quality and integrity of the KJFM in 2024 were upheld by 58 reviewers from eight countries. Their expertise has been invaluable in maintaining the high standards of the journal. We have profound debts of gratitude to these individuals.
If any reviewers from 2024 are inadvertently omitted, it is the editor’s responsibility to ensure that they are recognized. Please contact us to correct these errors.
